On May 1, 2024, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named the Legation one of America's 11 Most Endangered Places. This highlighted both the historical importance of the Legation and the urgent need for its restoration.
In May 2023, the collapse of a neighboring building created significant concerns and forced staff to evacuate the 10,000 volume library and archives over a frantic 48 hours. The collection is now housed offsite and the library building remains unusable until major repairs are completed.
The rest of the compound also shows the effects of 200 years of piecemeal repairs, our seaside location and the resulting humidity, and the vagaries of traditional medina construction. The Legation requires urgent and extensive preservation, restoration, and upgrades.
TALIM leases the building from the U.S. State Department, which does not have dedicated funding for its maintenance and repairs. Consequently, TALIM and the State Department are partnering with The Fund to Conserve to raise the necessary funds for essential repairs and preservation. The current cost estimate for comprehensive repairs and upgrades is $10 million.
Please help preserve the Legation for future generations through a designated donation to the Fund to Conserve.
