WOMEN’S LITERACY PROGRAM

Over 3000 women from Tangier’s old medina have acquired Arabic and economic literacy through the Legation’s free program, started in 1999. In addition to Arabic instruction, we offer courses in cooking, sewing, and introductory English and French conversation. Special lectures from lawyers, doctors, researchers, storytellers, inspirational role models, and others round out the program, opening new horizons and helping participants build better futures. Some graduates have created women’s cooperatives and started home-based sewing or baking businesses.

Now that I can read, I can read the instructions and take my medicine properly.

My son respects me more because I can help him with his homework.

With what I learned, I started my own business – and now my husband and my son work for ME.
